Postcard from Kinder Scout
Ila and I went for a sunset walk on Kinder Scout on Easter Monday. On the way up it was so warm in the sunshine that we were in just t-shirts when we reached the plateau. As you can see, the weather turned quickly and soon we were wearing all of our layers, waterproofs included! We drank tea in the rain, Ila made me laugh doing an impression of the ‘Michelin Man’ in all her layers, and we walked back to my house by torchlight. It was a typical Kinder adventure!
“I had this deep emotional connection to it that will never change.”
While interviewing writer Andrew Terrill for my Wild About Kinder podcast, I was in complete awe of the way he shared his stories and described his relationship with the landscape. I felt that I could relate to so much of what he was saying!
This interview is entertaining, heart-warming and inspiring. We hear from a man who shares openly and generously about how his journeys have changed him. There’s an air of curiosity and playfulness to his storytelling that I think you’ll find really engaging.
Andrew has written two books: The Earth Beneath My Feet (published June 1, 2021) and On Sacred Ground (published October 1, 2022). The books take readers on a 7,000-mile wilderness walk into the heart of wild nature. He also writes regularly on his blog which he describes as an outdoor diary, and shares beautiful photography.

I've teamed up with Moors For The Future to create an afternoon event about Kinder Scout. We'll be discussing topics that include what makes Kinder special to us, what has changed over the past 21 years, the benefits of moorland restoration, and how I was landed with the opportunity to write a guidebook about it. This will be a great opportunity to hear from Chris Dean who is moving on to other things after dedicating many years to Moors For The Future.
It is free of charge to attend, Vertebrate will be selling my book if you’d like to buy a copy, and I very much hope to see you there if you can make it.
2.30pm-3pm Welcome refreshments (tea, coffee, biscuits)
3pm-4pm Sarah Lister and Chris Dean ‘in Conversation’
4pm-4.30pm Book signing/ farewell refreshments
Then perhaps to the pub!
Join me in Hathersage this month where I’ll be sharing my Kinder Scout story which led to the opportunity to write ‘Mountain Walks Kinder Scout’ published by Vertebrate. All proceeds from the talk will be donated to charity.

The 92nd anniversary of the Kinder Mass Trespass will be marked by an access festival at Hayfield on Saturday, April 27, 2024.
The theme of the day will be the current campaigns to secure and enhance responsible access to open spaces in the countryside and our towns and cities.
Parking is very limited in Hayfield, so please arrive by public transport if possible.
Sign the Kinder Pledge
As part of the event, the Hayfield Kinder Trespass Group, together with representatives of the Ramblers’ Association, Right to Roam, the British Mountaineering Council, Spirit of Kinder and Outdoor Swimmers, will formally launch the Kinder Pledge, based on Benny Rothman’s 1989 Rivington Pledge, updated to reflect current issues and campaigns.
